The Wellathlon Games

Dr. Bill Hetller

Dr. Bill Hetller

The ten Wellathlon Disciplines or games are based on Dr. Bill Hettler’s (Co-founder of the National Wellness Institute) notion of the six “dimensions of wellness”.  These were expanded  to ten dimensions in keeping with the spirit of the decathlon challenge. No claim is made about the scientific or academic validity of ten dimensions of wellness. They could be more or less. The premise for the purposes of the Wellathlon Challenge is that the balanced fulfillment of all ten game requirements or the achievement of symmetry with regard to the fulfillment of ones needs in these ten life challenge areas will not only contribute to the health, wealth and happiness of practitioners, but will also catapult them into the proverbial “google societal top rank” or top percentile of the most successful people in any community as affirmed by Harvard University Professor Dr. Ned Hallowell.

Whole Vocation Game

Mother Theresa

Mother Theresa

The Whole Vocation Game is about discovering and pursuing our intrinsic life purpose. Whether we agree or not all religious and cultural traditions share the belief that We all come into being for a specific reason, i.e. to fulfil a need, purpose, calling or vocation. We are therefore not accidents of circumstances. Deeply satisfying happiness can and will only come from knowing, pursuing and becoming one (whole) with our respective  intrinsic life purposes. As the Chinese saying goes, “When we do things we love, we do not perceive it as work”. One”s life legacy is in direct correlation to which one leverages the 24/7/365 time resource given in equal measure to all irrespective of race, colour, creed or social status to realise ones life purpose. Some leave greater legacies than others in the time they were privileged to grace the world of the living. The Whole Vocation Game teaches RITES to discover and pursue ones intrinsic purpose.

Whole Systems Game

bioenergy field system

bioenergy field system

According to Wikepedia systems are “an assemblage of inter-related elements comprising a unified whole. In Latin and Greek, the term means “to combine, to set-up, to place together. A sub-system is a system, which is part of another system. It typically consists of internal and external components     (or elements) which interact with each other to facilitate the flow of information, matter or energy etc to sustain the balance between the whole  and the sub-system”.  Each vocation or life purpose represents similarly a “system” which requires the fulfillment of certain specific conditions, circumstances and structures. These systems and processes are sine qua non preconditions for its realization. The aim of the Whole System Game is to gain the necessary knowledge about  the purpose, elements and processes underlying the vocation of each practitioner in order to master  the competencies, skills and intelligence  needed to leverage such systems and processes for ones own higher purpose and that of all concerned. The whole systems game teaches RITES to identify and leverage systems conditions and structures to realize ones life purpose.

Whole Mind Game

The mind, the brain and the neurophysiology are  the tools which  guide the visible and invisible human system elements to create the conditions and structures necessary for the fulfillment of our life purposes. It is the deep understanding of the unlimited potential of the human, brain and neuro-system which brought  all enlightened geniuses past and present to conclude that the only poverty is the poverty of the mind. As the famous saying attributed to Budda states “What we are today comes from thoughts of yesterday and our present thoughts build our life of tomorrow. Our life is the creation of our mind”. Buddha. The Whole Mind Game teaches RITES to exploit ones full mind potential to be in symmetry with ones intrinsic life purpose.

Whole Solution Game

holistic approach

holistic approach

Most IQ tests used to this day are based on the assumption that intelligence or ones ability to solve life challenges is a matter of genetics. Harvard’s Howard Gardner debunks that myth with his  theory of “multiple intelligences” which states that each person has a preferred learning style. This confirms the 3 millennia old assertion of Aristotle and Galileo that that we cannot teach anyone anything only draw out the knowledge they already have within them. Intelligence is the mastery and leveraging of all thinking styles to arrive at solutions addressing all the interdependent and inter-related needs of systems at all levels. Begger my neighbour solutions solving one challenge whilst exacerbating others are no longer acceptable as proven by the present industrial model pursued for too long at the expense of the environment vital to our long-term health. The whole solutions game teaches RITES to never settle for anything less than the  highest common denominator.

Whole Observer Game

Meditation

Meditation

Spirituality is often misunderstood because of its narrow association with religion or life philosophies based on religious doctrines. But spirituality or the practice of routine and sustained reflection upon and seeing things from a higher detached perspective is essential for anyone independent of the life philosophy doctrine one espouses. It allows us to see any challenge in the context of the big picture of our respective intrinsic life purposes. Whatever name tag we choose to attach to that spiritual/metaphysical reflection process (prayer, medidation, yoga or scientific research), it is clear that it has breakthough beneficial impact for its practitioners. Medical and social scholars agree that aspects of spiritual wellness such as hope, meaning, purpose in life, connectedness, honesty, compassion, forgiveness, rituals, recognition of what is held to be sacred, and transcendent beliefs/experiences that may include a sense of a higher power  have as much an impact on ones wellness as do aspects related to physical wellness. The whole observer game teaches RITES to life events from a higher perspective.

Whole Health Game

Mind Body Spirit

Mind Body Spirit

No one contests Ralph Waldo Emerson’s contention that”the first wealth is health”. But do we follow it?. The Whole Health Game is based on the premise that the human body is resilient and always perpetually to restore balance to the dafault perfect health status through natural bodily processes. The aim of the game is to understand and reinforce these processes through lifestyle routines and practices which proactively triggers systems  actions to nourish, irrigate, oxygenate, energize, detoxify and induce healing  in the human life vessel to limit entropy. The less than optimal utilisation of the human life vessel like any mechanical system reduces its lifespan in direct relation corelation to the care taken to reduce such entropy.  The whole wealth game teaches RITES to internalize resourceful lifestyle practices and choices.

Whole Emotion Game

security

security

How well we learn to cope with fear, anger, grief and guilt determines how well we will deal with situations in life that invoke such feelings. As Maslov said “if the only thing you have in your toolbox is a hammer, every problem you are faced with will resemble a nail”. As humans we have access to and can use the entire panoply of emotions at our disposal. However, like in other life disciplines  we are too often prisoners of our desire to clutch on to only the known pleasurable stimuli and shut ourselves off from other potentailly greater possibilities. Emotional intelligence is the routine  proactive leveraging of  resourceful beliefs & emotional states  to fuel the realization of our respective vocations.  The whole emotion game teaches RITES to master and leverage ones emotions in resourceful ways.

Whole Bonding Game

Bonding

Bonding

Social Wellness has to do with the ability to forge deep personally gratifying relations with siblings, parents, relatives, friends and collegues. It deals with inter-personal skill sets (empathy, consideration, sensitivity, helpfulness etc) and cross-cultural knowledge (decoding verbal and non-verbal communications) needed to leverage relations with family, relatives, friends, colleagues and partners in resourceful ways for the highest good of self and all  concerned. Social intelligence is the routine proactive leveraging of bonding competencies, skills & processes  that  strengthen the affinity and cohesion  of our relations to family, spouses, business partners, friends & colleagues. the whole bonding game teaches RITES to master the skill sets needed to forge deep bonds with siblings, parents, relatives, friends and colleagues.

Whole Wealth Game
Irrespective of the vocation one chooses to pursue in life, according Robert Kiyosaki,

shelter

shelter

material wellness or the ability to afford ones upkeep and that of those depending on us for it, can be achieved through any one of four quadrants, namely as (1) an employee, (2) a self-employed professional, (3) a business owner and (4) and investor. Wealth is surplus income accumulated when ones earnings exceeds ones present and future need fulfillment  requirements inclusive of those of ones dependents. Material Intelligence is the routine proactive leveraging of systems & processes to satisfy the needs and wants of others in exchange for income. The extend to which one accumulates wealth is in direct relationship to the needs of the numbers of clients one satisfies. The whole wealth game teaches RITES to generate, grow and preserve income to provide for ones upkeep and that of those under our care.

Whole Ecology Game

environment

environment

Environmental Wellness has to do with the spatial environment we live in and are exposed to during each of our life cycle phases and the impact it has on our well-being. That spatial environment starts with the baby cot, our initial world at birth and slowly expands as we become aware of the room, the house, the immediate neighbourhood, the city and so on until we eventually become aware of the immensity of the universe. Environmental intelligence is the awareness about and routine proactive leveraging of environment systems & processes in order to manage risks and guarantee sustainability of personal and collective spatial environments which sustains all life systems. The Whole Ecology Game involves the teaching of RITES like the Feng shui wellness game.

The Wellathlon Challenge

The Wellathlon Challenge recognizes that each person has unique needs and desires which differ based on age, gender, profession, culture, interests and the life cycle phase they find themselves in. It takes for granted that the notion of one size fits all wellness solutions is a fallacy and that no one can and should try to be like others.

To the contrary, the aim of the wellathlon is to help each person find and maintain symmetry in the wellness mix approrpriate for their respective conditions and circumstances. That mix cannot be the same for each one of us but what can and should be part of the mix is the wellathlon goal and mantra  drawn  from Ralph Waldo Emerson to strive:

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson

To laugh often and much. To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;  To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;  To  appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Like with the  Decathlon the wellathlon distinguishes four challenge categories to enable practitioners to benchmark their progress against best practices of others with corresponding conditions and circumstances:

Junior Wellathlon Challenge,

Challenge familiarizing boys and girls between the ages of 14-21 with RITES for winning the lifetime wholeness game with the help of holistic wellness mentors assisted by tutors of the same age and gender as the mentored youth to relay the RITES in the language and diction corresponding to the socio-cultural sensibilities of their time and age. There is profound truth in the old saying that good as well as bad habits are acquired. Why not help youth acquire resourceful habits and life patterns that are going to propel them into higher orbit for life.

Women’s Wellathlon Challenge

Challenge familiarizing women above the age of 21 yeas with RITES for winning the life wholeness game with the help of holistic wellness mentors assisted by tutors of the same sex in order to relay the RITES in a language and diction corresponding to their socio-cultural environment, sensibilities and understanding. Women are often confronted by life challenges different those experienced by men because of socio-cultural and gender biases.  The Women’s Wellathlon takes into consideration resourceful habits and life patterns for dealing with such challenges.

Men’s Wellathlon Challenge

Challenge familiarizing seniors of post retirement age with RITES for winning the lifetime wholeness game with the help of holistic wellness mentors assisted by tutors of the same sex in order to relay the content in a language and diction corresponding to their socio-cultural environment, sensibilities and understanding. There is no age limit to have fun and start doing things you always wanted to do but never had the time to do it due responsibilities to kids, a boss or any of the self imposed limitations we put on ourselves.

Leadership Wellathlon Challenge

Wellathlon Leadership

Wellathlon Leadership

Challenge familiarizing leaders  with RITES for winning the lifetime wholeness game with the help of holistic wellness mentors assisted by tutors from the same business and institutional sectors to relay the content in a language and diction corresponding to their socio-cultural environment, sensibilities and understanding. The turbulent global economic and political climate as well as the unprecedented environmental and health challenges requires leaders to prepare holistically for the new local, national and international leadership challenge.

The wellathlon is at the heart of the new global revolution challenging and reminding youth, women, men, seniors and leaders in every community, business, country and the world that charity begins at home. To change the world we must begin with the revolution at home to change ourselves and the way we meet the day to day life challenges.

RITES for Winning the Lifetime Wholeness Game

The Wellathlon is the Lifetime Wholeness Decathlon Challenge developed by the Wellathlon Mentoring Fellowship to enhance competencies of its practitioners in ten quintessential life challenge disciplines through Rituals geared to Integrate, Teach and Exercise Symmetry (RITES) which embed unconscious cybernetic triggers in the sub-conscious of practitioners to intuitively guide them to choices that are consistent with their own wholeness and that of all concerned with their 360° life challenge ventures.

“Wellathlon” is derived from the Greek word “athlon” which means “game”, “battle” or “challenge” and the root “well” which in Sanskrit, the oldest known written language described the state of being “whole”, “in tune”, “balanced” or “at ease” as opposed to “being fractured”, “out of tune” and “dis-ease-d”.

The Wellathlon is first of all a “challenge” about establishing and maintaining rituals  integrating, teaching and exercising symmetry or “wholeness” of all of ones multifaceted and interrelated dimensions of wellness or life wholeness games. As Einstein remarked « A human being is part of the whole, called by us as universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest – a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness ».

Dean Radin affirms the same thing in “Entangled Minds” where he says that: One of the most surprising discoveries of modern physics is that things aren’t as separate as they seem. When you drill down into the core of even the most solid looking material, separateness dissolves”.

Put in another way one could say, the visible and invisible components of all systems are inextricably linked to each other and owe their respective existences or wellness to the wellness of each other. As summed up by the Latin expression, “conditio sine qua non”, the wholeness of the one is a pre-condition for the wholeness of the other.

pole vault

Harvard University Professor Ned Hallowell, a global thought leader on emotional wellness summarizes the practical beneficial ramifications of simultaneous consistent intervention on multiple levels of systems, when he says that People who practice a daily ritual of EXERCISE,, YOGA or similar form of prayer or meditative contemplation, EAT a balanced meal and SLEEP at least eight hours per day are not only healthy but are also amongst the most successful in any community anywhere in the world”. Therefore contrary to conventional wisdom the real life  challenge teaches us as shakespeare said, that “when the tide rises (through simultaneous interventions in multiple life challenge areas) all the boats are lifted”.

The Wellathlon Mentoring Fellowship applies these findings by teaching RITES in ten Lifestyle Wholeness Challenge games. The Wellathlon philosophy derives its roots from the “pentathlon” and other rituals practiced during ancient Greece. The pentathlon is continued today as the ladies’ “heptathlon” and men’s “decathlon”, the “pinnacle” of all track and field athletics events. The aim then as is today was to hone and test the translateral competencies of competitors in multiple events over short period of time to examine the judgement and management of their physical, mental and emotional resources under stressful competitive circumstances.

Other parallel wholesome educational rituals practiced by all during ancient Greece included the numerous daily Socratic style debating challenges in public squares as well as the mentoring tradition in terms of which those who had mastered the crafts in all trades took in “pupils/apprentices” into their courts (residences), to live with them and observe and learn first hand how they lived and plied their trade.

The “Wellathlon” seeks to renew contact with those ancient practices through RITES, i.e.

javelin

javelin

Ritualistic day to day lifestyle practices geared to Integrate by learning, Teaching and Exercising Symmetry in respect of ten interrelated and mutually interdependent “lifetime wholeness decathlon” games or disciplines.

The Wellathlon postulates that perhaps the true secret to the superior mind, body and intelligence prowess of decathletes just like the astounding number of athletic and intellectual giants produced by ancient Greece 5 millennia ago, lies hidden in the ritualistic daily mind, body and spirit routines they practiced in preparation of the periodic inter-city Olympics.

zubin-metha

zubin-metha

In essence, the Wellathlon, just like the decathlon is not about winning each track and field event or life challenge, but about maintaining symmetry in the management of the mental, physical and emotional resources in such a way as to achieve during each challenge a higher combined aggregate score compared to the previous time by tweaking and improving symmetries (performances/dexterities) in all disciplines. The Wellathlon like the decathlon is therefore comparable to the golf game, where golfers compete against their own handicap (benchmark performance) in each discipline of the game. They make the proverbial “fat lady” sing when they get their game together and “fire on all cylinders”, i.e. in the long and the short game, instead of relying on excellence in just one or two aspects of their game like most of us do.

This disciplined pursuit of symmetry in all life challenge pursuits though difficult at first pays handsome dividends in the long run as Shakespeare appropriately remarked: “When the tide rises, all the boats are lifted”. Therefore the more symmetry is established the greater its synergistic knock on effect in other related and interdependent areas.

Just like the decathletes engage in long-term preparation which often starts months and months ahead of the competitive season, Wellathletes measure and continually track their competition preparedness in the following ten Lifetime Wholeness Challenges Games:

(1) The Whole Vocation Game

(2) The Whole Systems Game

(3) The Whole Solutions Game

(4) The Whole Mind Game

(5) The Whole Observer Game

(6) The Whole Health Game

(7) The Whole Emotion Game

(8) The Whole Bonding

(9) The Whole Ecology Game

(10) The Whole Wealth Game
